If you leave Basel on a number 10 tram, the end of the line 40 minutes later is Rodersdorf. There's been a restaurant at the 'Bahnhof' for some years but recently this place reopened with new management as: Les 4 Copains.

On one side there's a large terrasse - but this was October so no terrasse for us. You enter into an informal bar and to the left is the restaurant area. Relatively small and also quite informal with an interesting ceiling decoration of train/tram tracks overhead. The menu had an 'Autumn Selection' which included cream of pumpkin soup, deer, wild boar etc.

On to the winelist. Relatively short, but I went for a 1998 Avignonesi, Vino Nobile de Montepulciano which went quite well with the 'game' dishes we all choose from the Autumn menu. The food was well cooked and generous in proportion. My 'kurbis' soup was quite good and my 'Hirsch' peppered-entrecote was very good, accompanied by sprouts, spätzli and red cabbage together with sweet chestnut. Others had a white wine & mushroom risotto (tasted good) and wild boar. This wild boar dish was a little salty, but I'd have been just as happy to have this main course as my own. We were all 'too full' for a desert.

1998 Avignonesi, Vino Nobile de Montepulciano
Deep garnet red colour. Nose has flowery tones of violets together with deep plum fruit, leather and licorice tones. The palate has good acidity and medium tannins. The fruit is a mixture of red and black with quite good concentration. Medium length and a good match with the food.

This is a friendly, informal place with good food and excellent value when compared to Basel - come to think of it when compared to the other local villages too. Four of us ate for 250chf and 54chf was for the Montepulciano.
