Restaurants - Two Italians    October 2002

Two Italian restaurants, but that's where the comparison stops. Contrasting in needs, cuisine and aspect :

Lido da Elio
Pizzeria & Restaurant
An Der Interlakenstrasse

This is one of those places that I've driven past so many times, always on the way to somewhere - or back home from somewhere else. It's between Spiez and Interlaken superbly set on the edge of Lake Thun with views in one direction across the lake, in another East towards the Jungfrau.
It was lunchtime and we were on the way to Interlaken, so the perfect stopping point. We had no reservation but (the three of us) were ushered to a perfectly situated table with a 'reserved' sign. The table was in the corner of the room with views both across the lake and towards the mountains.

The menu in Italian and German was extensive but we decided to make use of the large 'pizza oven' in the corner of the room - and excellent pizza's they were too! Certainly after a large meal the evening before, these pizza's left no room for dessert. The pricing was reasonable given the location; 18chf per pizza, and a bill of 66chf for 3 people including two beers and a mineral water.

Perfect preparation for the mountains to come !!!

San Domenico
Stampfenbachstr. 40
8006, Zürich

Initially a restaurant of convenience on the way to a 'serious' New World winetasting at the Zürich Marriot - so a full stomach was pre-requisite. There was 4 of us, the rain was heavy, the temperature was 9°C and it was already 1:45pm. In Switzerland you quickly learn that by 2:00pm, lunch is no longer served!

So when we found this place near to the Marriot it was enough to be allowed(!) to sit. It must have been getting late, as we weren't offered the 'Tagesmenu' only the standard one, Sicilian cuisine though in Italian, German and English. Quick choices allround - 4 homemade minestrone soups, 3 ravioli's (2 different) and one tagliatelle - phew!

The minestrone when it arrived was hot and obviously (as advertised) home-made; not very spicy but full of fresh vegetables - a good start, I was starting to feel warm already!

The reason I bothered to write about this place is that the ravioli when it came was without doubt the finest I've ever tasted. I took the spinach filled 'grade' which was liberally sprinkled with tiny pieces of sage leaf, and (probably) a mixture of melted butter and olive oil - superb was the only suitable descriptor. Others had the Gorgonzola 'grade' which I have to say was excellent, but I wasn't looking to swap mine! The tagliatelle was pretty good to; everything being suitably hot.

Certainly off the beaten track if you're in Zürich, but only 5/6 minutes walk from the train station - you owe it to yourself to try this place.
