VIÑA CARMEN - CHILE
2001 Sauvignon Blanc, Vale Central 12.80chf
Very pale. Nose is pleasant with gooseberries. Sweet palate has fruity acidity. Quite interesting.
2001 Sauvignon Blanc, Gran Reserva Casablanca Valley 20.00chf
Pale yellow. This is the only one of the sauvignon's which has oak on the nose. A little grapefruit and quite juicy. Just a little vanilla on the finish. Not bad.
2001 Chardonnay, Vale Central 12.80chf
Medium yellow. Boiled sweets on the nose. Fruit and oak on the quite thin palate. Merely okay.
2001 Chardonnay, Wine Makers Reserve Casablanca Valley 30.00chf
Yellow. Oaky with peaches and melons on the nose. Sweet palate has lovely intense fruit with cinnamon on the finish. Good.
2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, Vale Central 12.80chf
Medium ruby-purple. Slightly cheesy nose then reveals a little black fruit. Relatively simple palate but a little mint comes through. Okay.
1999 Cabernet Sauvignon, Gran Reserva Casablanca Valley 21.00chf
Dark ruby. Nice chocolate nose. Tannic with some pepper and vanilla on the finish. Quite good.
2000 Merlot, Vale Central 12.80chf
Medium ruby-purple colour. High toned nose. Very red & black fruity with furry tannins. Quite good.
1999 Wine Makers Reserve Maipo Valley 48.00chf
Deep garnet. High toned nose with black cherries and faint mint. Very tannic but good intense fruit. Very young, but very good too.
SANTA HELENA - CHILE
2001 Sauvignon Blanc, Gran Vino Central Valley 9.00chf
Pale yellow. Nice appley nose. Sweet palate with good acidity. What more could you possibly ask for at the price? Quite good.
2001 Chardonnay, Gran Vino Central Valley 9.00chf
Pale yellow. Some melon and no obvious oak on the nose. Palate has no real depth but is quite fruity. Again a good effort considering the price.
2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, Gran Vino Central Valley 9.00chf
Medium cherry colour. Cherry and blackcurrant nose. Sweet palate which has reasonable acidity and length. Also good and excellent value.
2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva, Selección del Directorio Central Valley 19.00chf
Deep ruby colour. Nose is oaky, but the oak manages to be quite 'fishy'! Coffee and tannin on the palate and some astringency on the finish. Only okay.
2001 Merlot, Gran Vino Central Valley 9.00chf
Medium cherry. Funky nose on first bottle. Second is better with some cherry. Palate has some fruit, but is quite thin. Not as good an effort as the other 'Gran Vino's'.
2000 Merlot Reserva, Selección del Directorio Central Valley 19.00chf
Still purple. Nose has toasty oak and some kirsch. Cassis on the palate and good furry tannins. A good finish too. Very good.
2000 Carmenère Reserva, Selección del Directorio Central Valley 19.00chf
Dark purple. Nose has unpleasant oak. Good fruity, tannic palate. Good but I prefer the slightly cheaper Errazuriz Carmenère.
1998 Cabo de Hornos Viña San Pedro, Lontué Valley 85chf
Deep ruby with a little spice on the nose. Sweet palate has intense fruit with very good acidity and tannin. Good length too. Very good.
VIÑEDO CHADWICK - CHILE
2000 Viñedo Chadwick, Maipo Valley 110chf
Dark purple colour. Medium strength toasty oak on the sweet nose. Very sweet palate with plums and dark chocolate on the finish. Very good.
VIÑA ERRÁZURIZ - CHILE
2001 Sauvignon Blanc, Casablanca Valley 14.80chf
Very pale. Apple and grapefruit nose. Nice acidity but palate is a little harsh - probably from oak. Okay.
2001 Chardonnay, Casablanca Valley 15.80chf
Pale yellow. Nice nose with pears and melon. Palate is fruity with good acidity. Nice style. Good.
2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, Anconcagua Valley 14.80chf
Ruby colour. Toasty oak nose. Palate has reasonable fruit and structure. Okay, but not that interesting.
1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva, Aconcagua Valley 28.00chf
Dark ruby. Spicy nose. Very tannic palate with excellent blackberry length. Very Good.
2000 Merlot, Curico Valley 15.50chf
Medium cherry. Cassis nose. Sweet with medium tannins. Some plum fruit on a medium finish. Quite good.
1999 Syrah Reserva, Aconcagua Valley 25.00chf
The same wine that I didn't think much of last year(!) Deep ruby colour. Lovely plum and bilberry jam on the 'individual' nose. Good acidity and tannin with plum fruit again. Now very good (!)
2001 Carmenère Estate, Anconcagua Valley 16.80chf
Deep ruby-purple. Good black fruit nose with some pepper. Tannic palate has intense black fruit and a medium finish. Liked this a lot - very good.
1999 Don Maximano Founder’s Reserve, Aconcagua Valley 89.00chf
Deep ruby-purple. High toned nose has bilberry and cassis. Palate has very full but soft tannin. There is oak on the palate too but quite enough fruit to balance. A very good wine.
SEÑA - CHILE
1999 Seña, Aconcagua Valley E Chadwick - R Mondavi 98.00chf
Ruby-purple colour. Eucalyptus and cherries together with a really interesting hardwood note on the nose, but not oak! Very sweet palate which has deep furry tannins and intense, almost lemony fruit. This is very fine. Better than the 1998, but I'm not sure if it's better than 1997.
LUIS FELIPE EDWARDS - CHILE
2000 Chardonnay, Colchagua Valley 12.00chf
Very pale. Apples and boiled sweets on the nose. Palate has quite harsh acidity. Though quite fresh. Not bad.
2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, Colchagua Valley 12.00chf
Ruby colour. Blackcurrant on the nose. Nice cherry fruit on the palate and finish. A nice wine. Taking into account the price, a very good wine.
ALMAVIVA - CHILE
2000 Almaviva, Baron Philippe de Rothschild - Concho y Toro 89.00chf
Ruby-purple. Medium oak with some spice and deep fruity tones on the nose including black olive and stewed tea. Palate is tannic with concentrated black fruit. Still a little oak on the palate. Perhaps fine.
VIÑA HORMIGAS - ARGENTINA
2000 Malbec, Altos Las Hormigas Mendoza 15.80chf
Ruby-purple. Nose has ground pepper. Palate is sweet with strong controlled tannins. There's a medium to long finish too. A good, interesting wine.
2000 Malbec Reserva, Altos Las Hormigas Mendoza 38.00chf
Dark purple. Nose has a strong black olive note. Sweet palate has a juicy 'summer pudding' fruitiness. This is quite long too. Very good.
BODEGA FAMILIA CASSONE - ARGENTINA
1999 Malbec Reserva, Obra Prima Mendoza 26.00chf
Ruby-purple with a redcurrant and cherry nose. Long and fruity but a little astringent in the finish. Quite good though.
SANTA ROSA ESTATE, LA AGRICOLA - ARGENTINA
2000 Tempranillo, Oak aged Mendoza 13.80chf
Ruby colour. Licorice nose. Mouth coating tannins with again some licorice on the palate. Reasonable length - not bad at all.
2000 Malbec, Oak Reserve Mendoza 14.80chf
Dark ruby. High toned flowery kirsch nose. Good structure with nice fruit. A good wine.
2000 Bonarda- Sangiovese Reserva, Mendoza 19.00chf
Medium colour. Reserved nose with faint chocolate. Sweet tannic and long too. Actually quite good.
1999 AZ, Mendoza 28.00chf
Deep garnet. Nose has intense red fruit. Sweet palate has coffee on the medium length finish. A nice wine.
FABRE & MONTMAYOU - ARGENTINA
1997 Malbec, Mendoza 19.00chf
Dark ruby-purple. Sweet red & black fruits on the nose. Good structure and fruit with medium length. Good.
1997 Grand Vin, Mendoza 32.00chf
Nose is redcurrant and raisins. Medium/full tannins and cool acidity complement the black fruit. Very good.
BODEGA NORTON - ARGENTINA
1999 Cabernet Sauvignon, Mendoza 16.5chf
Dark ruby. Coffee and blackcurrant nose. Redcurrants, coffee and vanilla on the palate with cherries on the finish.
1999 Malbec Reserva, Mendoza 20.00chf
Dark ruby. Spicy nose with crushed pepper. Toasty oak on the palate. Lots of interest, but doesn't quite gel together. Very good for the price though.
1999 Privada, Mendoza Merlot-Cabernet-Malbec 26.8chf
Deep purple. Some white pepper on the nose. Reasonably sweet with good blackberry and licorice palate. A good wine.
BODEGAS NIETO y SENETINER - ARGENTINA
